Hawk Folks of Georgia Who Are Known to Be Not Connected to Our Tree
Simply put, there are basically two clusters (and perhaps a small third group) of Hawk folks in Georgia who are not in my Hawk line, that is, who are not descendants of Andrew Hawk.
- Harlton G. (Mike) Hawk's line, namely, the descendants of Artimissa Hawks and Lewis C. Gaddis. Mike writes that "Artimissa was born in SC and migrated to Lumpkin County in the 1850’s. She is listed in the 1860 Census with her mother, Matilda, and sisters. She is in Lumpkin County in the 1880 Census, listed as Artimissa Gaddis along with her children. Lewis Gaddis died in Lumpkin County in 1886. The 1900 Census shows Lewis Hawk living in Lumpkin County and his brothers; John W Hawks, Alonzo Hawk, Barney Hawk, and James Hunter Hawk living in Union County. At that time all of the brothers except John W dropped the S from their name, and started using Hawk. Lewis Gaddis’s legitimate sons took the Union County land they were farming in a court settlement (I assume that the union between Artimissa and Lewis Gaddis was never formalized). Lewis Hawk went from the Union/Lumpkin County area to Washington County, where he was a Share Cropper. Lewis Hawk died in Richmond Co. but is buried with Martha in Washington County. His brother John W. Hawks went to Jackson County, GA, and his Hawks descendants reside in both Jackson and Oglethorpe counties to this day." Alonzo, Barney, and James Hunter Hawk moved west, eventually settling in Oklahoma. Lewis Hawk’s son and Harlton’s Great Grandfather Fulton (aka Marion Eddy Hawk) moved into Richmond County. Attorney Victor Hawk of Augusta, founder of the Vic Hawk law firm, is a part of this cluster.
- There is a small cluster of Hawk in Chatham County, the Savannah area, that are not connected to my line, but I'm not sure where they fit.
- Descendants of the former slaves of the various Hawk plantations of Walton, Morgan, Jasper, and Randolph counties. Many of the records below are probably those of African Americans whose families took the Hawk surname upon emancipation.
My many thanks to Mike Hawk for helping to add some order to my thoughts on this page. At some point I'd like to create a page specifically dedicated to his line, because I think that would be a continuing resource for the researchers of this Andrew Hawk line. It's so easy to get confused among these lines.
Hawk Folks of Georgia Who Are Mysteries at the Moment
Some of the records below are listed because I'm so far unable to verify their race. Many of the black Hawks who live in Walton County descend from former slaves of the Hillsman, Thurman, or Seaborn farms. Likewise, many of the south Georgia black Hawks descend from the Randolph County estate of Jacob and Catharine Hawk.
Other records below are certainly connected to our lines, but I'm keeping them on this list until I can review the original documents.

WILKES County was formed in 1777. It was split up and some of the resultant counties include ELBERT 1790, OGLETHORPE 1793 and LINCOLN 1796. The records above for Elbert and Oglethorpe may involve Hawk/Hawks branches that stayed put and the county changed around them. (Though I doubt it, it is possible.)
Seaborn Hawk of Jasper County wrote letters to the following people as mentioned in his farm diary:
1853 J. Phillips Joel C. Phillips bro-in-law? and Hamilton H. Kaigler brother of his wife Harriett?
1860 Thomas Hawk
1861 Philips and Thomas Hawk
1861 D. A. Ogburn and Thomas H. Hawk
1862 "J. P. Croover, Dawson County (Harris side)" Could this be the Aunt Peggy Harris line, migrated from Va.?
Added some more unknowns in my census work in June 2007.
Neaden Hawk, age 51, wife Berry L. 42, son Robert 16, dau Pearl 12 b.FLA, son Thomas 5 b.FLA, dau Louese 3 b.ALA, 1920 Crisp Co. GA census
John W. Hawk age 28, FL/GA/FL, rural mail carrier; wife Marie 24, GA/SC/GA; son John W. Jr., age 11/12, GA/FL/GA
Cleve Hawk, age 33, widowed, farm labor; son George 12; son Clifford 10; dau Christine 8; mother Mary, 55, widowed; 1920 Heard Co. census.
The above family is a real mystery to me. I am certain Mary and Cleve are connected to the Heard County line, but how? Cleve must be the son of Jacob R III. In the 1900 census he is listed as Jeremiah W's nephew, and a Mary, possibly the same one here, is listed as Jerry's sister. Possibly sister-in-law?
1920 Jackson County: a cluster of Hawk, including Erastus, 59; Annie E., 59, and George W., 60. I think these are the HAWKS line people. I only checked Erastus's census record: Erastus S., 51; wife Anna L., 51; dau Millie O., 26; dau Fanie H., 23; son Milard L., 21; son Virgil V., 16; son Aubrey J., 13; dau Dorris B., 11.
Lowndes County, Valdosta, 1920. Charles R. Hawk, 47, editor newspaper; wife Annie B., age 45; dau Charlie B, age 17, b.FLA.
Carry Haulk, female, age 69, single, lodger in the William Lee household, 1920, Grady County. She would have been born about 1851.
Stricken from the search:
From the book by Robert S. Davis, Some Records of Jasper County, Georgia
Anthony Hawk m. Savanah Davis 9-28-1877 JASPER Co. black
Genia Hawk m. George Boone 7-14-1887 ibid., pg 7, record group 179-22 black
Henry Hawk 1903, unbound will, ibid pg 65 rg 179-2-4 black have transcription of this will, mentions niece by marriage Fanny Hawk, niece Bell Bonner, exec Charley Bonner, Mattie Shy adopted dau.
Knowing this Henry Hawk of Jasper County is black puts to rest some longstanding questions. He is likely one of the freedmen from Seaborn's estate.
H. H. Hawk from A. G. Shy note 1893 ibid Notes, Mortgages, etc. pg 466 almost certainly black

From correspondence with Harlton G. (Mike) Hawk in October 2008:
Washington County, 1920. Fulton Hawk, age 23, blacksmith, bicycle shop; wife Leota, age 16, b.TX. Note, Fulton is on the 1900 census with a number more Hawk folk, who I believe are really HAWKS along with the Jackson County knot.
Washington County, 1920. Lewis Hawk, age 55, farmer; wife Martha, age 49; dau Bertha, age 16; son Clark, age 12.
These two men are Mike's grandfather and greatgrandfather, respectively.
Mike further explains that Lewis Hawk(s)' brother, John W. Hawks, left Washington County and resettled in Jackson County. The present-day "Hawks" of Jackson County descend from John W. Hawks.
Mike, thanks for clearing up this longstanding mystery for me.
